Mitford Crematorium and Gardens

Ryan Cole

An Abstract World of gardens and burial lands sits on the site of Mitford Castle. This proposed world is created by long walls branching out through the landscape, meeting the River Wansbeck. The walls create an immediate relationship between the existing ruins and the river whilst also creating a territory of land which consists of Abstract Gardens and burial lands, between the crematorium and the differing chapels.

The proposal is about breaking through differed thresholds to arrive within varied atmospheres. From outside the subtlety and subdued nature of the crematorium is amplified by the stone cladding baring resemblance to the ruins and creating an extension of the historical castle. Once entering the proposal, the rammed concrete and gardens of bright flowers create a heightened experience for the mourner. After walking through the gardens or the linear concrete paths, the mourner will arrive at either the crematorium or the chapels, to other contrasting experiences. The white rendered walls and mural tiles alongside the deep reveal windows create a memorable space for the moments of remembrance of a lost one.
