Research
Architecture Design at Northumbria focusses on understanding and designing across multiple scales of the built environment, from city scale, to buildings and their interior environments. This work includes the human needs of individuals and society. The group takes an analytical approach to design by applying contemporary theories on sustainability, resilience, placemaking, regionalism, and creative re-use. To develop evidence-based design research, staff in this group are active in professional practice, engaging with authentic real-world design problems, across a range of challenges such as climate emergency, health & wellbeing, and ageing.
The projects undertaken by the research group have won in excess of 30 design commendations, including RIBA, RICS, Civic Trust and Constructing Excellence awards. Design projects have been the focus of several highly cited journal papers and Paper of the Year awards.

Portfolios
The research underpinning each design project is demonstrated through the vehicle of the design portfolio; each sets out the research questions and methods, with an accompanying narrative and illustrations. The originality, rigour and significance of the exploration is also outlined.
