White Clawed Crayfish Revival Program
Marcus Lou
White clawed crayfish is the only native crayfish in the UK. Crayfish act as an imported character in freshwater ecosystems as they are omnivorous foragers and their position in the river food chain is in the lower level. As a result, their numbers will directly affect other water species populations.
My proposal is focusing on the population of white clawed crayfish. Factors such as: competition from American signal crayfish, pollution levels and changes in environment, the white clawed crayfish is facing imminent risk of extinction. It is estimated that WCC will be extinct in Britain by 2030 under this level of decline.
The nursery is to provide a suitable environment for the WCC to hatch and act as a place of safety at the same time. It is known that the mortality rate is high in their first year of life, so the centre aims to increase survival rates.
